A secure, reliable and powerful digital infrastructure is the fundamental pillar of digitization and a prerequisite for the digital transformation. The goal of the city administration is therefore clearly defined: All of Rastatt is to be connected to a fiber-optic network. In the long term, as many households and businesses as possible in the city area are to receive a fiber-optic connection.
According to the latest Broadband Atlas published by the Federal Network Agency, 67 percent of Rastatt households already have broadband availability of more than 1,000 Mbit/s, and 41 percent of all addresses in Rastatt have a fiber-optic connection.
Measures implemented
- 2011: Parts of the core city supplied with fiber optics. Joint fiber-optic pilot project with Telekom.
- Fiber-optic expansion in the commercial areas and fiber-optic connection of schools in Rastatt. Made possible by the subsidized broadband expansion in the district. Financial participation by the city.
- 2020: Rastatt draws up broadband expansion master plan. With financial support from federal funds.
The aim of the further expansion strategy is to promote cooperation with telecommunications providers for roll-out on their own account. Fiber-optic roll-out is to be carried out privately without public funding.
Current measures
Fiber optic expansion in the reed villages
The expansion of the fiber optic network in the Ried villages is another important step toward full fiber optic coverage and fast Internet throughout the city. To this end, the city has concluded a cooperation agreement with the provider "Deutsche Glasfaser" for the expansion of a fiber optic infrastructure (FTTH - Fibre to the Home / Glasfaser bis in die Wohnung) in the districts of Plittersdorf, Wintersdorf and Ottersdorf.
Since enough households were won over to the project, the network is now being expanded. Work is scheduled to start in 2023. Further information and the current status of the project are available on the Deutsche Glasfaser website.
