More climate protection, better quality of life: the city of Rastatt has set itself the goal of making the transport transition sustainable. The integrated mobility concept aims to achieve this. It shows how modes of transport and traffic routes in Rastatt can be shared sensibly and in an ecologically compatible way among all users. The mobility concept is closely linked to the Rastatt Mobility Pact.
What is the difference between a mobility concept and a mobility pact?
The integrated mobility concept focuses exclusively on the city of Rastatt and lists all measures planned up to 2035. The mobility pact is initially designed to run for five years and focuses on the entire region.
When did you start developing the concept?
While the Rastatt concept was developed by the city alone with the help of an external planning office, the Mobility Pact is an initiative of twelve partners: Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport (political leadership), Karlsruhe Regional Council (operational leadership), City of Rastatt, Rastatt district, Regionalverband Mittlerer Oberrhein, Wirtschaftsregion Mittelbaden, TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe, Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund, Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg, Mercedes-Benz, Getinge Holding and Siemens.
How did the development of the mobility concept go?
After recording and analyzing the current transport situation in the city of Rastatt, strengths and weaknesses were identified and the need for action was defined for the period up to 2035. Specific individual measures were derived from this. The integrated mobility concept (PDF) (8.7 MB) was adopted by the municipal council in March 2023.
Was the public also involved in the process?
Yes, and very intensively. Over 400 suggestions were received from the public, including more than 190 on improving walking and cycling alone. A further 480 people from the region took part in an online survey on their mobility behavior. In addition, people were able to enter their own ideas for improving the transport situation in Rastatt and the region itself in an interactive map. A household survey on mobility behavior will follow in September 2023. 5000 selected households will be surveyed.
What measures have already been implemented in Rastatt?
In Rastatt, additional road markings were installed to increase the safety of cyclists. In addition, Rastatt took part in the city cycling competition for the first time in 2020 with 29 teams. This saved seven tons of CO2. In the city centre, traffic light circuits were optimized and a parking guidance system was installed, which reduces traffic searching for parking spaces and thus relieves the environment.
Was the pop-up cycle path well received?
How did motorists react to the pop-up cycle path?
What has happened in the region in terms of mobility?
The latest measure of the mobility pact was launched in December 2022. Since then, the Rastatt transport company's bus route 231 has been running every one hour from Rastatt railroad station via Wintersdorf to Soufflenheim and Seltz. This can be done conveniently with a single KVV Wabe 361 ticket, while a ticket for the Fluo 67 Alsatian transport network entitles the holder to travel as far as Rastatt.
The cross-border bus route is a trial service initially limited to three years. The costs are shared on the German side by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport, the district of Rastatt, the city of Rastatt and Mercedes-Benz, and on the French side by the Région Grand Est, the Collectivité Européenne d'Alsace, the special-purpose associations Pays Rhénan and Communauté de Communes de la Plaine du Rhin and the Roppenheim The Style Outlets shopping center.
Which projects from the Mobility Pact have been implemented?
A so-called regiomove port was set up at Rastatt station at the beginning of 2022. There, travelers can choose between different modes of transport and switch between them easily. They can also find out about car-sharing offers and bicycle parking spaces. There are lockers for smaller items of luggage, rain pants and cycle helmets. A central digital terminal on the station forecourt provides an overview of routes, local mobility options and inner-city destinations. In combination with the regiomove app, journeys can be booked directly at the terminal. There are seven such regiomove ports in the Karlsruhe transport network.
Are there any other measures that have already been implemented?
The existing regional bus line X34 from Rastatt station to Baden Airpark was extended to Bühl station in December 2020. In addition, employees of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt can now cycle directly to the site, where 200 new parking spaces have been created. Getinge, on the other hand, enables its employees to lease e-bikes. In addition, employees in the Getinge administration can work from home for up to three days. This also reduces the burden on roads, buses and trains and the environment. The company is also working flat out to realize the planned Karlsruhe-Rastatt high-speed cycle path.
