The Rastatt municipal forest is not only a place for recreation and a habitat for many animals and plants, it also provides the important raw material of firewood.
As soon as fall begins, the timber harvest starts in Rastatt. Every year from October 1 to 31, citizens can register for the purchase of firewood and lots of logs with the city administration or the respective local administrations.
Registration for firewood and lots
Rastatt residents who wish to purchase firewood, firewood in long form or firewood can register their requirements online from October 1 to 31.
In exceptional cases, residents of the districts can register their requirements with the respective local authorities. Residents of the city center should contact the Forst customer service department, phone 07222 972-6565, e-mail: brennholz@rastatt.de
Information for new customers
Anyone wishing to buy firewood for the first time from the forestry administration or the local authorities must present proof of a suitable firewood source (current certificate from the responsible district chimney sweep).
In addition, firewood from the Rastatt municipal forest is only available to citizens whose primary residence is in Rastatt or one of its suburbs.
In addition, a certificate of participation in a chainsaw training course is required.
Receipt of the application is decisive
The allocation of cutting lots is based on the receipt of applications. Cutting lots are only allocated if the weather conditions allow for processing and removal from the forest without damaging the ground.
An agricultural tractor with a suitable trailer is always required to process lots and transport the firewood. The delivery of firewood in long form depends on the status of the work in the municipal forest and can last until spring.
What else needs to be considered?
- All forest owners only offer freshly felled firewood for sale. Wood purchased in the current winter must be air-dried for at least two years before it can be used for heating.
- To avoid accidents, the forestry administration asks you to observe the following: Full personal protective equipment must be worn for all chainsaw work. In addition, only biodegradable chain lubricant from specialist retailers may be used when operating a chainsaw in the municipal forest.
- The order of sterling wood (1m pieces) is binding and will be invoiced in the ordered quantity after processing.
- If long firewood and logs are ordered for a household, priority will be given to the long firewood.

Sustainability: volume limitation
The aim of the Forestry customer segment is to continue to ensure security of supply for firewood. Peak supply levels were reached in the winter of 2022/2023 due to feared bottlenecks in the availability of fossil fuels. In order to ensure a sustainable supply of all firewood assortments in the future, the supply of hardwood firewood must therefore be limited (six steres per household). Softwood firewood is available in sufficient quantities. In principle, all citizens can therefore expect to receive the required quantities of firewood this winter.
The calorific value of one stere of hardwood corresponds to that of 1.4 ster of softwood. For example, 7 steres of softwood would have to be ordered to replace 5 steres of hardwood.
The basis for invoicing is always the price per cubic meter. In order to cover the volume demand for long firewood (hardwood and softwood), customers must be prepared for the fact that logs with larger diameters will also be sold.
