Showdown 1849

175 years ago, Rastatt was one of the main sites of the Baden Revolution. Unique in the course of the revolutionary events: In May 1849, soldiers joined forces with rebellious citizens to work together for a liberal constitution. The siege of the federal fortress by Prussian troops in Rastatt in July 1849 led to a dramatic "showdown" and the suppression of the revolution.

Special exhibition on the Baden fight for freedom

The Rastatt City Museum is commemorating the Baden fight for freedom with a special exhibition. Numerous objects and original documents are used to retell the story of how the first liberal movements in Baden and Rastatt led to a radical struggle for co-determination and basic rights and ultimately to the suppression of democratic demands.

Building bridges to the present

The revolution initially failed with its aims. However, it laid the foundations for the democratic movement in Germany. Numerous demands from 1848/49 can be found in our fundamental rights today. However, democracy, freedom and fundamental rights cannot be taken for granted even today.

Various people and groups from Rastatt, the region and the world have their say in the exhibition as part of a participatory project in cooperation with the city's integration and community work department. This makes it clear how relevant the historical events and developments of 1848/49 still are today.
