Compulsory schooling and school registration

In Germany, children and young people are required to attend school. This includes not only attending lessons, but also other compulsory school events.

Children usually start elementary school at the age of six. There are ten public elementary school in Rastatt. However, it is also possible to enrol at a private school.

At what age will my child start school?

In Baden-Württemberg, all children who have reached the age of six by June 30, 2023 will be required to attend school. At the same time, children who turn six between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024 can be registered for school by their parents. This registration triggers compulsory school attendance.

Which elementary school is responsible for my child?

For elementary school, a school district regulation applies according to the school law of the state of Baden-Württemberg. This is based on the respective residential address. The parents of future first graders are contacted by the elementary school in their respective school districts. Rastatt's primary school districts

When does my child have to be registered for school?

School registration usually takes place in November/December of the previous year. Enrollment takes place by the end of February. The elementary school responsible sends a written invitation to parents/guardians to register their children.
Note: If you have not received an invitation for your child, please contact the elementary school responsible for your home address.

Where does my child have to be registered?

Each child must be registered directly at the relevant elementary school.

What documents does my child need to register for school?

Please come to school registration together with your child and bring the following documents with you:

  • Birth certificate of your child
  • a registration certificate from the Citizens' Registration Office (for new residents)
  • proof of custody (for single parents)
  • proof of deferral (if you applied for this in the previous school year)
  • proof of the vaccinations carried out (vaccination record)

Can my child start school a year later?

In particularly justified cases, your child can start school a year later. The official term for this is deferment. You can apply for this in writing when registering at your elementary school. The school management will decide on the deferral.

Can my child transfer to another elementary school?

In particularly justified educational or organizational exceptional cases, your child can change school districts and be enrolled in a different elementary school. To do this, you must submit an application to the relevant elementary school. The managing principal will decide on the application.

What childcare services are available?

The town of Rastatt offers a wide range of childcare options at its elementary school. All-day childcare is available at seven elementary school. In addition, nine elementary school offer childcare for up to two hours during the school day.
